Who Is Steve Neale and What Did He Do?

Stephen Roy Albert Neale is a British philosopher and specialist in the philosophy of language who has written extensively about meaning and information mainly in the industry of media. Steve Neale states that genres all contain instances of repetition and difference, difference is essential to the to the economy of the genre. Neale states that the film and it's genre is defined by two things: How much is conforms to its genre's individual conventions and stereotypes. Neale believes that films of a type (genre, like romance or horror) should include features that are similar, so the audience know it is a horror film or romance, but also include features that are different, to keep an audience interested. This is his theory of repetition and difference. His genre theory is as seen below.

Genre Theory

A film genre is a classification of motion pictures based on similarities in the emotional response to the film (tragic, comedic, etc.) or the narrative aspects. The majority of cinema genre theories are based on literary works. Fiction and documentary are the two most basic genres, from which subgenres such as docudrama have arisen. The courtroom and trial-focused drama known as legal drama is another subgenre. Hybrid subgenres can be formed by combining seemingly unrelated types of fiction, such as the blending of horror with comedy in Shaun of the Dead. The romantic comedy and the action comedy movies are two more popular combinations.
